Description of Maastricht

Maastricht is located along the river Maas in southern Limburg.  It is located in the “Dutch Mountains” which is somewhat of a misnomer, although the region is hilly, and, compared to the rest of The Netherlands, they are mountain-like. Southern Limburg is an extension of The Netherlands that lies between Belgium, Germany and France.

Maastricht itself is a city of 117,000 that is known for its historic buildings and the yearly Carnaval parade. The city has been inhabited since pre-historic times and is considered by some to be the oldest city in The Netherlands.  Because of the close proximity of Belgium, Germany and France Maastricht and the University have a distinctly international character with many courses given in English to accomodate the diverse student population.
